Retired Horse Adoption Programme

Every retired horse has given people the most precious years of its life. Some were competition horses, some were teaching horses, and some helped countless children fulfil the dream of a first ride. When they retire through age, injury, or health, what they need is not to be forgotten, but a home where they can live in peace and be gently cared for.

Founding a retired-horse sanctuary is not only about providing a place to stay. It is a commitment that lasts ten, even twenty years or more. Caring for a horse is not a one-off cost but a daily, unbroken responsibility: hay, feed, wood shavings, medical care, vaccinations, deworming, farriery, dental care, emergency treatment, stable maintenance, and the cost of the people who do the caring.

This is why we have created our horse adoption programme. It is not the sale of a horse, and it does not hand the duty of care over to the adopter. It is a way for many people to protect one life together.

Why the programme exists

What adoption makes possible

  1. Give every retired horse stable, long-term care.
  2. Build a sustainable financial foundation for the sanctuary, so that short-term shortfalls never affect the horses’ welfare.
  3. Ease the burden on our founder, who has long carried these costs alone, freeing more energy for hands-on care and for advocacy on retired-horse welfare.
  4. Let more horse lovers become guardians of a retired horse, even without the means to keep one themselves.
  5. Build a lasting, meaningful bond between people and horses, so more people come to know these horses’ stories and worth.
  6. Promote respect for life, animal welfare, and responsible care, so society can see what retired horses truly need.

Shared adoption

Up to five adopters per horse

So that every adopter can build a real and warm relationship with a horse, we use a shared adoption model. Each horse is open to a maximum of five regular adopters.

This spreads the monthly cost of care, while letting each adopter stay genuinely involved in that horse’s life, rather than losing the meaning of the connection among too many people.

We believe a horse does not need thousands of people watching over it. It only needs a small group willing to stay beside it for the long run. Every adopter is a guardian in that horse’s life.

Beyond adoption

Alongside the adoption programme, we welcome support in many other forms.

  • One-off donations
  • Monthly recurring donations
  • Corporate or brand partnerships and sponsorship
  • Dedicated funds for hay, medical care, or farriery
  • Stable repair and facility improvement projects
  • Sponsoring supplies such as hay, wood shavings, and feed
  • Public talks, equine life-education courses, and farm visits
  • Charity merchandise such as T-shirts, picture books of the horses’ stories, postcards, calendars, and tote bags
  • Charity photography, benefit concerts, and charity auctions
  • Legacy gifts and memorial donations, so that love continues on to the horses

Retirement is the beginning of another good life. And you are the one who walks beside them into it.
